SF Test Console — Chrome Extension for Salesforce Developers

SF Test Console — Chrome Extension for Salesforce Developers

SF Test Console is a productivity Chrome extension designed for Salesforce engineers to execute Apex tests, pin key classes, and monitor real-time code coverage with minimal developer latency.

Project Overview

  • Creator & Lead Engineer: Vishwa R (Kyroceus)
  • Role: Sole Developer & Designer
  • Status: Published and active on Chrome Web Store
  • Store Listing: Chrome Web Store — SF Test Console
  • Target Audience: Salesforce Developers, Technical Architects, and QA Automation Engineers

The Problem It Solves

Salesforce developers spend a significant portion of their daily workflow waiting on test runs and checking coverage:

  1. Developer Console Lag: The default Salesforce Developer Console is browser-heavy, prone to session disconnects, and slow to load test results.
  2. Repetitive Test Selection: Manually searching for and selecting the same set of Apex classes across test iterations creates friction.
  3. Delayed Feedback: Developers typically wait for asynchronous batch jobs to complete without clear, immediate visual status of coverage thresholds.

SF Test Console solves this by providing a lightweight popup and sidebar console directly within the browser, eliminating the need to keep the heavy Developer Console open.

Technologies Used

  • Frontend: Vanilla JavaScript (ES6+), HTML5, CSS3 (zero framework overhead for instantaneous load)
  • APIs & Protocols:
    • Salesforce Tooling API (Apex test execution & code coverage endpoints)
    • CometD / Streaming API (long-polling pub/sub for test event notifications)
    • Chrome Extensions Manifest V3 APIs (storage, tabs, scripting)

Key Implementation Details

  1. Zero-Dependency Vanilla JavaScript: Built without heavy external libraries to ensure the extension launches within milliseconds and consumes minimal RAM.
  2. Class Pinning & Quick Runs: Allows engineers to “pin” their active feature classes, enabling one-click re-runs with persistent state stored via chrome.storage.
  3. Real-Time CometD Event Stream: Subscribed to Salesforce Apex test result streaming topics using CometD. Instead of aggressive polling, test progress and failures are received reactively.
  4. Immediate Code Coverage Visualization: Calculates and visualizes granular line-by-line coverage percentages right when tests finish, alerting the engineer if coverage dips below deployment thresholds (75%).
